Hail to the geek

October 9, 2008

Last night I went to Teance with some friends, a specialty tea shop in Berkeley. On Wednesday nights they have a free tasting so we thought we’d go check it out. Got to taste some nice brews, and picked up some lichee red tea (yum!). A lot of the people who were there were regulars, who go to all the different events and could guess what type of tea we were drinking and what part of China it came from.

Total tea geeks, and I mean that in the best possible way.

And that, is what really separates us from the animals. Not our opposable thumbs, or higher cognitive abilities, or even all the cool shit we’ve built and created.

Nope, it’s our ability to completely and totally geek out about shit.

I love geeks. We’re awesome.

Ask me about Batman. No, seriously. Because I could talk about that guy for days.

Or Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series. Or the works of Douglas Coupland. Or Elliott Smith. Or trashy gay romance novels. Or song lyrics. Or 90’s pop culture.

Sure, most of these are useless, but it doesn’t matter because geeking out about them is fucking fun.

And nothing’s more exciting than the rush that comes from finding something new to geek out about. That special push that let’s me watch an entire TV season in less than a week or spending hours researching new keyboards.

So what do you geek out about? What are those things that probably take up too much of your time but you wouldn’t have it any other way because they bring you such a profound sense of glee?

Everyone’s a geek about something. Wear it like a badge of honor.

Own it.
